This chocolate granola is so crunchy and delicious and full of chocolate flavour. It’s not too sweet, and makes the perfect snack, or addition to yogurt and berries for breakfast.

It bakes up into nice big granola clusters, if you want it just to snack on. Or you can break up the clusters more and use it as cereal, or an add-in for a bowl of yogurt. Either way it’s delicious!
Granola is one of those things that is super adaptable to your tastes. We liked this version of chocolate granola with peanuts and raisins added in. But I also made a version with almonds and dried cherries instead and that was equally delicious.
So add in whatever nuts and dried fruit you like and make this chocolate granola recipe your own!

What kind of oats are best for granola?
Old fashioned rolled oats are the best kind to use for granola. This is because the bigger grains stand up better to the coating and baking process. I don’t recommend using quick oats or minute oats for this chocolate granola recipe.

What is the best oil for granola?
I always use canola oil for my granola, but this is mostly because I always have it on hand, and it doesn’t have a lot of flavour, so it doesn’t change the taste of the granola.
You can use any type of oil you like for granola though. I’ve often used melted coconut oil, and like using that as well. Any other mild vegetable oil will be fine here though, so use your preference.

Is it cheaper to make your own granola?
It is generally cheaper to make your own granola. The total ingredients do not cost as much as the store bought version of granola does. And it’s super easy to make, so it’s worth the few minutes of effort to make your own!
Homemade granola can also be healthier than the store bought version. There’s typically less sugar and oil in homemade granola, plus you don’t have any preservatives added in. So it won’t last quite as long in your pantry, but it’s likely better for you!

How to make Chocolate Granola:
- This granola recipe uses egg whites in it. Beat them to a froth before whisking in the other wet ingredients. I use the carton of pasteurized egg whites instead of having leftover yolks.
- Mix in whatever chopped nuts and dried fruit you prefer. We enjoyed this granola with both peanuts and raisins, and almonds and dried cherries.
- I used Dutch processed unsweetened cocoa powder in this recipe. I think natural cocoa powder would work just fine, but the chocolate flavour will not be as strong.
